264 4 KMP 1942/II Herbert Jørgensen
* 4. januar 1921  † 6. marts 2009

   Mandag den 23. marts 2009

Pastor Jørgen Flensted Jensen stod for den smukke højtidelighed og Birk
holdt en meget personlig mindetale for Herbert.  (Læs den for neden på

denne side, klik HER.)

The  Final Farewell.
Farewell to Herbert Jørgensen on Saturday Oct.24th 2009 at Sunset Villas Memorial Garden.///A very nice service was conducted at the Memorial Garden.

Herbert's wish was, that half of his ashes were to be with his first wife and the other half to be placed at the Memorial Garden at Sunset Villa. Herb spent countless hours on Friday's grooming the garden and park. Herb was a member of the Geritol gang, so named because of their work.
The reason for the delay was waiting for Herb's family, a brother's daughter Vikki from Oregon, USA as well as Herb's brother Jens from Denmark.
On one of the pictures you will see the two family members flanked by Herb's 2 sons Tim & Wayne, taken under the picture of Herbert's picture just placed moments earlier.
Æret være hans minde.

Birks tale ved  mindehøjtideligheden i  Grimsby Kirke:

Herbert Jørgensen

Garder  246 - 4 Komp. –1942 II

Dear family and friends of Herbert Jørgensen.
We are gathered today to celebrate the life of Herbert and remember a great person many of us have known for years.
In my case it goes back 49 years to 25th March 1960, the year Herbert joined East Canada Guard’s Association, 2 years after ECG was started.
Herbert started organizing the yearly target Shooting at Sunset Villa, always well prepared, he would show up with his homemade trailer, loaded with everything one would require at a shooting range. All the targets for 10 different shoots rolled up and placed in Campbell’s soup tins, where the top and bottom had been cut out and new labels placed on the outside with the appropriate # for the categories to be shot. Also there were stacks of underlay to be placed on the ground for the comfort of each shooter. Scopes were placed on tripods to see how the aiming was going during the shoot, boxes and boxes of ammunition had to be brought out and not to forget the half dozen rifles, then after the shoot tabulation or scoring of each target.
Herbert walked away with many a 1st, he would take his time, aim and make no mistake, hitting the target every time.
In the early years scoring was done by some of our members trained by Herbert, in later years first we had Finn Petersen, a long time friend of Herbert’s, help keep score, then as Timmy and Wayne got older, they came with Herbert and started scoring.
Needless to say, Herbert was a marksman with many years of target shooting experience. After all, years earlier he had been on a select shooting team in 1951 from Alberta representing Canada at a competition in Bisley, England.
Herbert also made sure there where trophies for each shoot, all prepared at home, weeks in advance of the actual day of the shoot.
In 1995 Herbert introduced us to Fugleskydning or Bird shoot, it was liked by all and became another yearly event taking place in the fall.
Over the years Anne and I have had many joyful trips with Herbert & Jean,
Chicago, New Denmark, Kolding and up the Bruce peninsula to Inger Rasmussen’s cottage.

I would like to share a couple of stories with you today.
Many of you would know Herb had a very dry sense of humor.
I remember many years ago an incident I had with Herb, him and I often drove to different functions together either in my car or Herb’s, this particular trip was in Herb’s car. Some of you maybe remember what I am going to tell you now. Herb had a habit of driving with his right foot on the gas pedal, but at the same time riding with his left food on the brake pedal, needles to say an early sign of brake wear was evident. Now here comes my mistake, I had the gall to mention to Herbert, that it was hard on the breaks. Herb turned to me saying, don’t tell me how to drive, I am older than you, and I know what I am doing.

This brings me to the 2nd incident about 15 or 20 years ago, again Herbert was driving, we had been at a weekend hunting and fishing (STAG) get together,
I believe at Jørgen Kjærholm’s cottage up North. Driving back late Sunday afternoon I noticed Herbert’s usual habits. But I also noticed he was driving awfully close to the car in front, braking often and complaining he had difficulty seeing the cars, even some of the road signs seemed hard for him to read.
I brushed it off with the good time we had over the weekend, too much eating, drinking, inhaling second hand smoke and yes sleeping in a room with 6 or 8 other guys (4 bunk beds). I believe Herb had a top bunk; naturally the oxygen was in short supply up there.
But driving back I was not going to suggest that maybe I should drive, remembering my earlier lesson.
In any case I got dropped of in Kilbride and Herbert continued home to Hamilton and went straight to bed. The next morning Jean was in the kitchen getting breakfast ready, when Herb finally came down complaining to Jean of blurred vision and being dizzy. Jean turned and took a look at Herbert then burst out laughing. She said to Herbert, where in the world did you get those glasses, they are not yours. It turned out Herb got his mixed up with Knud Hansen’s.
I can assure you, some car ride I had the day before. This is my tribute to Herbert, a great friend and determined man.

He will be missed by all.
Ære være hans minde.
